Bird Photography Tips

How to photograph birds?

Bird photography tips for perfect bird portraits:

1) First things first – Your camera equipment

what DSLR is good for fast-action photography? I would recommend a fast camera that can handle at least 1/2000 of a second shutter speed with 6 to 9 fps.But if you already have an entry-level DSLR, it doesn’t mean that you cannot capture birds – it just means that you might miss a good shot, just because your camera is not fast enough.
What lenses are good for bird photography? The Nikon 500mm f/4 VR  while the 600mm f/4 VR  Nikon D3s + 600mm f/4 VR + 1.4/1.7 TC (TeleConverter). Nikon 300mm f/2.8 + 1.4x/1.7x TC or Nikon 200-400mm f/4.0 + 1.4x TC, Canon 800mm f/5.6L IS (Image Stabilization),
01 Go telephoto.

2) Camera settings – Maintaining fast shutter speeds, set shutter speed to a minimum of 1/800-1/1600.
02 Aperture priority
Get out of auto mode and switch to aperture-priority as this will put you in control of your depth of field. An aperture of f/4 or f/5.6 will blow out the background for a stronger shot, meaning you can shoot at a faster shutter speed and keep up with a restless subject.

1. Light and Composition.Early morning and late afternoon light is usually the best time for bird photography. The light during these times is soft. As a bonus, the birds are very active as well.

2. Capture their Action and Behaviour.

  • Photograph early in the morning or late in the afternoon when birds are very active.
  • Track the bird until focus is locked before pressing the shutter.
  • Wait patiently until the bird ignores you.
